Pappu Can’t Dance was a PR-Gimmick and was not about Salman Khan

It has been 10 years since ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na’ and since on the internet, they celebrate everything these days, the release of this film was also celebrated with the media conducting an interview with its director Abbas Tyrewala. JTYJN was also the launch vehicle for Imran Khan. Imran, being the nephew of Aamir Khan, was really hyped to be the next big thing. His first film was a hit and what followed was a series of flops.

In his interview, the only things we found interesting are the secret he let out about the Pappu Can’t Dance song and what went wrong with Imran Khan. First, here’s the song in case you don’t remember:

10 years ago when they promoted the song, there was a rumour going around that it was based on Salman Khan. Aamir, as you know, is a marketing genius, must have thought of this gem since he was also friends with Salman back then. Now, they are not so close but that’s another thing. 10 years ago, here’s how that headline was:

Both Aamir and Imran were asked about it and they made-up some story to divert the attention.

Then, boom! 10 years later, the director lets the cat out of the bag. He said this was all a publicity and it was made up by their PR-team. He probably forgot what he said 10 years ago when he blamed the media for spreading this rumour.

Pappu Can't Dance was a PR-Gimmick and was not about Salman Khan

Was the Pappu in ‘Pappu Can’t Dance’ song referring to someone in real life?

It was quite amazing. First there were articles that it was based on Salman Khan. This was before the film was released. This was done by our PR team. I was like, ‘Oh my God, Salman will beat me.’ But it was just a fun marketing gimmick and Salman was very sporting about it.

But later when it started being applied to Rahul Gandhi, I think some [pauses] … once we had coined Pappu, it was always going to be bigger than one song or a film. Referring to someone as Pappu has become a cultural phenomenon. I love the fact that it has almost become iconoclastic.

See, the truth does come out even if it is after 10 years! It seems that Aamir enjoys making fun of Salman. Only he knows why!

10 years has passed since Imran made his debut. His last film was in 2015 and since then, he has been trying his hands at other things since he has not been getting any good offers. He already written a script and is looking forward to turning director with it. Speaking about Imran, here’s what Abbas has to say:

Imran Khan was thought to be meant for bigger things after an impressive debut. Sadly, 10 years on, he is nowhere on the scene.

I don’t like to judge other people’s choices, career. I just think that Imran’s soul was not completely in sync with hardcore Bollywood [Hindi cinema]. Everytime he tried to do something that was really hardcore Bollywood, he looked a little out of place. Whether it is as an actor, and probably more like a filmmaker, which is what he had studied when I had met him, even then he knew that acting would be something he did for a while and then he wanted to make films.

I think Imran needs to find a distinctive voice in the sense that say a Rajkumar Hirani or a Farah Khan have. I don’t think Imran will be able to speak in the voice of typical Bollywood. I believe the most exciting phase for Imran, be it as an actor or filmmaker, is still before him. To judge his career now would be very silly.

We have to wonder whether Aamir tried to help him out again. We have also wondered how does he manage to live and go on vacations if he is not earning any money? Many people have said that he has a loaded mother-in-law, but it can’t be that she is giving them money, right? Who knows?! Imran was really into fashion and all that. He wanted to be the male Sonam Kapoor. You can see he is trying to make a statement every time he stepped out for a movie promotion. Abbas too tried to make it as a director, but couldn’t. It’s been 10 years since he made ‘Jhootha Hi Sahi’ with John Abraham. He managed to piss off a lot of people before that since it was said he got really arrogant after the success of JTYJN.

How many of you have seen JTYJN?

    1. Imran is just not cut out for Bollywood. He doesn’t want it bad enough and I don’t think he could bring himself to be as manipulative and pr hungry as he needed to be. I bet he’s happier than a lot of current stars are too.

    2. People are too early to judge in Bollywood. Some characters really suit an individual. But people take it as a good acting performance. It happened with Imran, people loved him in first movie cz of novelty factor plus he looked the part of early 20s confused guy. After that he actually tried acting but just couldn’t. It was same again and again.
Ditto happened with Chatur guy of 3 idiots. People thought wow, what an actor but later it became clear thats the way he actually talks! He couldn’t do much after that.

    3. Imran is not a good actor at all. There is no difference in the way he speaks on screen and real life. He is himself on screen and there in lies his reason for failure. He also doesn’t have a hero’s screen presence. Only looking cute is not enough to be a successful hero in hindi films. if that were the case then baring Salman and Hrithik no one would have succeeded. For all the nonsense RK does off screen the man has screen presence and can act well which he has proven time and again. Imran has great advantage being Aamir’s nephew. He got way too many chances to redeem himself and he messed all of them up. His last movie with Kangana was such a disaster and everyone knows she did that movie because Salman (Aamir’s friend) asked her to do it. Imran is not cut out to be film hero. It is one thing to want something another to deserve it.

      1. He can be ok Google’s voice. He just has to read lines, which he is very good at.

    4. I loved JTYJN. The songs of the movie were amazing too.Liked Imran and was rooting for him to improve and make it big despite him being a non-actor. But that day never came. When the debutants Ranbir and Imran made their debut I was team Imran all the way. Eventhough Ranbir was the better actor.
Even after all this years if the wooden Sid and non-actor Arjun can survive (that too with back to back flops) I really wonder why Imran could not survive? As Abbas Tyrewala observed maybe Imran just was not cut out for the mainstream bollywood and he just could not find himself.
IMO his niche is frothy romcoms and he was not that bad in movies like JTYJN, I hate love stories, EMAET, MBKD.

    5. It is my opinion that of the three khans, bet akshay wishing he was a khan too lol, salman is the best of the lot, better than srk and better than aamir. Yeah on another level he is lowdown if it was really him who killed those people and if it was he who shot the deer but I give him credit when it comes to helping people get a chance in life (actors so to speak). He have took a lot of people under his wing, how much have srk and aamir done to help collegues out? it may be said that srk helped PC but then he was also sleeping with her so that dont count, and aamir is doing the same with fatima, so that dont count. Yeah salman is said to have relations with all those girls he are helping, kat, jacky etc but at least he is sticking with them to enable their success and is not hiding his relationship under a rock like how srk and aamir is doing. And what is this onsault of photos of srk and his vacation with his family, jeez you would think they never gone on a vacation before, soaking up the sun lol the same effing sun shining on all of us, what they think? is a different sun shining on them than that what is shine in india right now? i cringe when i see their topics on pv. I think they are trying their hardest to not think about PC and Nick when no matter how much money they spend going places both their minds, gauri and srk, are on PC right now. Also try googling the best bollywood couple or the most faithful couple lol it is shocking that akshay/twinkle, kajol/ajay, and srk/gauri names comes up in the first instance rofl best joke ever.

      1. the purpose of SRK’s life is not his work or kids anymore, but getting back at Priyanka Chopra. Sharing pix from their vacation.. do they even know what instagram is for?

Salman is less competitive. That’s true. Aamir didnt like SRK back when he was ahead, now he might befriend Sallu again since Salman movies have also started flopping like SRK’s.

How is Salman helping out a bunch of has beens or talentless people doing us any good, really!?

What about people like Arijit Singh, who lost out on popular songs like Jag Ghoomeya and others because Bhai’s ego couldnt handle a joke?

    6. I actually liked this movie and imran more than ranbir. What is also odd is amir is willing to guide ranbir on movies but not imran who is family

    7. Aamir and SRK have this irritating habit of poking fun at others. They cannot make a joke without taking a dig at someone else. But just try criticising them and see how their egos rear its head. But on the other hand SK I have not seen doing that. Only if someone puts him down or rubs him the wrong way then he retaliates. I am no big fan of SK too but this is just my observation.

I haven’t seen JTYJN. Feel good movies with chocolatey heroes doesn’t do it for me. But I have to say Imran Khan and Genelia made a cute couple.

    8. I loved it! Was a fab movie. I also liked imran khan- he had an earnestness about it. His issue was not getting better at his craft. He stopped growing as an actor & wasn’t able to carve or find his niche. It’s too bad! He used to be a sort of fav of mine back then.
