Open: Your Best, Worst and Most Disappointing Indian Movies of 2017

We are going ahead and keeping this as an Open post so that all the readers can come in here and share their best, worst and most disappointing choices of Indian films this year. Unfortunately or fortunately, we didn’t get to watch that many films this year. The ones that we did watch made us not want to watch any more films, especially with family around.

So, you are open to share the films that released only in 2017 that you have managed to watch. In the meantime, here’s our very short list.

Indian Films of 2017

Best

Baahubali 2

The most awaited Indian film of 2017 was undoubtedly ‘Baahubali 2’. It went on to break more records and was the only film that we were looking forward to watch for the last 2 years. Since ‘Padmavati’ is not releasing this year, ‘Baahubali 2’ is the only big budget film that we were eagerly waiting to see this year.

The thing with both ‘Baahubali’ movies is that there are so many great scenes to speak of, so many memorable and impactful scenes. We remember there was a time when Karan Johar’s films had impactful scenes, where there’s that one scene that’s so beautiful and well-shot. In both ‘Baahubali’ films, there are so many of these great shots. Let’s not forget the songs. It’s probably the first Indian film series that have managed to have great songs in all the languages it released. It’s something that not even AR Rahman has achieved.

Worst

Jab Harry Met Sejal

It didn’t take long for ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ to be the worst film of this year. It probably was 15 minutes in the film, probably around the time Shah Rukh Khan’s character met Anushka Sharma’s character. That was when we were out. It wasn’t a movie for Shah Rukh and it was a shame to see him do something like this. It’s what 2nd hand embarrassment feels like! The problem with him and his acting is that there seems to be no one around him, who can advise him on how to act. He’s doing it all wrong and it seems that they are just there clapping in awe instead of telling him to try again.

Raabta

We admit that we were curious to see this mess, so we did when it played on TV. It was horrible. Sushant Singh Rajput was trying so hard and the other guy, the one who was the villain in ‘Neerja’, Jim Sarbh is not comfortable at all acting in a Hindi-speaking film. He had difficulty speaking the language, which makes his acting look not so convincing. We couldn’t see the whole thing and stopped less than an hour after watching it from the beginning. Kriti Sanon looked lovely, though, throughout the film. It was just a messed up script and a waste of money.

Disappointing

Lipstick Under My Burkha

The hype surrounding this film before its release was what made most people want to watch it. We watched it at home, all ladies only; from the old ladies to us youngsters. We thought we were about to see some great revolutionary film about women and their achievements. It wasn’t. It was disappointing because it was a film that was heavy on content that is not commonly seen in a commercial film. This was not a commercial film, but more of an art film.

Honestly, the film was just like any other film. It told the stories of 4 different types of ladies of different ages and religions. It’s a story that seemed deja-vu. The only difference is this film filmed and showed its actors stimulating ‘the act’ many times in the film, whether willingly or unwillingly. It was a bit too much and unneeded. The film could have very much done well without that many ‘in the act’ scenes.

The ending of the film was something else that was disappointing. It gives you the idea that perhaps the writer or director of the film was too exhausted that he or she didn’t know how to end it. We go through all of these characters and learn their stories, but nothing happens. So, was the film just to show us these characters and their lives? That was it?

A Gentleman

This movie had a great trailer, but the movie itself pretty much felt lost and confusing. It was alright at the beginning and somehow, it just went without logic. Like what happened? Were there two or not? Such a waste of money in making this film was all we could think of. Looking hot works, but it doesn’t carry a film for more than 2 hours if the story doesn’t make sense.

Jagga Jasoos

Everyone pretty much guessed what a disaster this film was going to become based on the number of years it was in the making. It had a good teaser, but the trailer pretty much showed something that we didn’t feel interested to watch. Sure enough, the film was like that too. It is a film that kids will like more than adults. The way of the narrative, like rapping or singing the dialogues, didn’t work for us. It appeared more like a way at a child’s school than an actual film. Perhaps, it would have been better off with newcomers in the lead instead of two big stars. At least, that’s what we think.
