May 2018 – Bollywood Blind Item 5

Today’s first blind item comes from Filmfare and is about this talented senior actress. After searching long and hard about this blind item may be about, we think we got it. It is strange that the actress was recently announced to be part of this film. We thought that perhaps everything was already settled, which is why they are getting ready to shoot. Then they announced the addition of the young actress in the film and soon after that, they announced the addition of this senior actress.

This senior actress might be talented, but she has not been getting good offers on her own. It’s a good thing that she has friends in the form of superstars and top actors, who are ready to help her out. Her last film too was courtesy of this top actor, who is a friend of hers, and now this one too is due to her friendship with this superstar. She was also earlier seen in another film with this superstar, which was directed his brother.

Even though, she might have been referred to do this role, she still took her time to decide if this was the right one for her. Hopefully, the film will turn out to be good since the additional casting looks great so far. Check out the blind item from Filmfare below.

This talented actress’s tantrums piss off an ace director

This not-so-young but talented actress’s tantrums have become too much for this blockbuster director to handle. The list of her tantrums and demands is just endless. First, the actress demanded a huge remuneration for her character in the director’s upcoming project. The director negotiated and they settled over an amount. Then she took a long time to sign the contract, demanding changes to be made in it every now and then. The director still maintained his cool and tolerated her demands and attitude. Once the contract was locked, she told the director that she feels she’s too old to play the character she signed up for and asked if he could give her another role in the film. To which the director said that the other roles in the film had already been cast for.

So she agreed to play the part that she had signed up for but told the director that she felt the dialogues that were written for her were dated. She requested if she could sit with the dialogue writer and rework her dialogues. By then the director had lost his cool and how. Last heard, the director was looking for some replacement for her character. Phew!

    1. Most senior actresses aren’t nice to the younger counterparts, and while it is not good way to treat others but honestly can you blame them?

In the industry, no matter how talented or commercially successful the actresses are, they get replaced with younger actresses who are not half as talented as them. For some of them to survive longer, they have to be close friends to or married to super star actors, producers and directors, or they have to become producers themselves.

They watch their male co-stars get paired with younger actresses while they are expected to be content with playing supporting roles or sometimes sister-in-law or mother to actors they are supposed to be paired with.

I recall reading articles that mocked Madhuri for rejecting mother roles because according to them, she wanted to be paired with the Khans. Some criticized her for demanding high renumeration whereas they wouldn’t hesitate to give a male star the same amount if he demands for it. And this is someone regarded as the female Super star of the 90s.

Among the older superstars, only SRK was romantically paired with his 90s co-star Kajol in recent years (2015). When was Salman, Aamir, Akshay or Ajay D last romantically paired with their 90s co-star?

Ajay Devgn was romantically paired with an 18 year old actress in Shivaay (he had a kissing and love making scene with her in the film!) whereas Kajol who’s 5 years younger than her husband is playing mother to a 19 year old actor in her next film.

Everyone is calling Deepika a superstar now but if things continue the way they are, she won’t retain her status for long unless she marries a producer or becomes a producer. There are already complaints that top production houses are declining doing films with her because according to them she charges too high.

The hindi film industry is ageist especially against the actresses.

      1. @Ageist,being rude to juniors isn’t a solution and neither should it be an excuse for actresses … Being courteous isn’t always a bad thing… If tomorrow I am upset about anything, should I be rude to the people around me? NO…

If Tabu was nice and sweet to her junior actresses, she will be loved and respected by the younger generations even more… She forced Ajay Devgn to cut short Parineeti’s role, she asked the movie’s pr to project herself as the sole female lead and she also refused to be clicked in the same frame as parineeti… Parineeti understood this and kept a respectable distance from her…

The senior actors like Salman,SRK,Akshay etc try to stay relevant by working with younger actresses…

Some of the reasons that I can think of as to why the actresses over 35yrs usually dont get meaty/lead roles are
        1. The indian society is acceptable of older guys marrying younger women and not the other way round… Back in the olden days, men marrying a women 10 years younger was a norm..It’s still is…That’s why a SRK or a Salman paired romantically with a younger actresses is acceptable for the audience, whereas an older woman-younger guy romance is still a taboo..
        2. The actresses usually take a break after marriage or after having children since in Indian society a mother who leaves her children in care of nannies is not seen in a positive light… No matter how big star you are,the society expects you to take care of husbands and children after marriage.. Case in point- Kareena is bashed for leaving her son in Nanny’s care.. Ash is bashed for not spending much time with husband and in-laws..
        3. The only genre that the Indian audience are fond of is the Romance genre.. In India most women on an avg get married by the age of 30yrs,so expecting a 35 yrs to 45 yrs old actresses to play romantic interest in unrelatable to many.. They expect them to play roles of mother to small kids since in our society the women in their 30s usually have children…

        Possible solution –
        1. The actresses can themselves turn producer and make entertaining movies with lead female characters.. The content must be entertaining one and not the so called serious women centric which usually get standing ovation in film festivals but fail to work on BO.. In short, the film should not be preachy type..
        2. Prepare the audience to accept all types of genres.. A leading character need not always have a romantic interest or love story.. Career related movies shown in a interesting way can accomodate any actors irrespective of age.. An individual in his/her life span does lot of things apart from wooing a guy or a girl.. A lot of stories can be told that don’t need an age criteria…
        3. Not all songs need dance wherein the dancer comes straight from dance schools and performs a dance number… A lot of songs can be played at the background and hence the actresses like tabu, kajol etc who aren’t great dancers can be spared from these.. Independent solo singers or indie bands can perform during opening/closing credits(i.e. songs must be picturized on them) and this can help drive independent music and also give publicity for bands,,
        4. Actresses in their 40s should maintain certain fitness.. Vidya Balan,Tabu Rani and even madhuri and juhi to some extent have little extra weight.. not expecting them to be reed thin but an fit body is a must..

when one or two movies become hit, then automatically the producers start investing in such movies and it can start a new trend…

    2. I feel like it could fit Madhuri for Kalank as well because Tabu usually seems to be fine with doing smaller parts in big movies, i.e. Golmaal, for her friends like Ajay or Salman.

    3. i feel tabu is quite cold to other actresses in her films but is nice to the heroes..
like during drishyam promotions she had these cold vibes for shriya saran and completely ignored her presence in kapils show and elsewhere(thot maybe its bcos of nagarjuna )
but then she was also rude to parineeti..she shud relax and be more grounded..

but on the other handif tabu feels the dialogues r outdated, thrs a huge chance they indeed are.she seems like smone who knows her craft well..

      2. @ageist– i do agree that things r not fair to the actresses..but being rude to an actress younger than you for tht reason is not done..i like rekha , vidya balan, hema malini, deepika for that reason..theyr not rude to smone whos younger or less qualified in their work..theyr either cordial or really sweet to everyone else they work with..
when jaya bachchan or tabu are rude to actresses/reporters who r actulie trying to be nice to them, i think thats uncalled for..

    4. Tabu’s good old days are far behind.. The movie is made on a large scale and many die to get cast in Salman’s movie(though many Salman’s movies are crap) because of guaranteed BO success.. Ali is doing fine as a director and is his best form right now… At this point in her career,Tabu should be grateful to get big budget movies… She was cold to parineeti while Golmaal shooting…. I think Tabu should stay grounded else, the recommendations by her friends in the industry may dry out…
