Kalank looks really expensive

One thing you must have noticed about period films in Bollywood is that they are expensive to make. The reason being the sets that they need to build and the costumes come from another world. Other than having a high budget, period films also have a hard time at the box office. So far, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has managed to make his films look like money well-spent for his producers (Sajid Nadiadwala).

    How did YOU

Today, the teaser of ‘Kalank’ was launched. It stars Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha and Madhuri Dixit.

    First, take a look:

Isn’t it too presumptions to say the beginning looked like a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film?

    How did YOU

Madhuri Dixit looks so nice in the teaser, but her appearance was just to short. If you remember, Sridevi was supposed to do this role and when she suddenly passed away, Karan Johar approached Madhuri to be in this film. Now, we are wondering how Sridevi would have been. Nevertheless, Madhuri is fine too. And, she looks good too!

    How did YOU

If you also remember, there were dozens of blind items then about Sanjay Dutt being apprehensive about working with Madhuri again. According to him, he has been with more than 350 women so why should one bother him? Oh wait, now we remember. Is it because she dumped him?

Aditya and Sonakshi look nice in the trailer. It seems they are paired together romantically in the film, but ARK is forced to be with Alia like Ranbir Kapoor.

The biggest surprise of ‘Kalank’ is going to be Alia Bhatt. Note how we say “is going to be” because she does not look like the kind of actress, who can blend in a period film. Neither does Varun. So the test is going to be whether or not they can make it work.

Anyways, Sanjay at the teaser launch looked like he had rather be anywhere else than there. Also, why does he look like a retired uncle ready to go on a bike ride vacation touring the country?

Also at the event was someone else, who would rather be anywhere but there: Aditya Roy Kapur. He looks like he just woke up, put on his sherwani and took a grab to this launch. But he still looks handsome, though. Somehow the quiet ones look better than the childish ones!

At the launch, Alia and Varun’s banter appear quite friendly and childish. They were being friendly with each other and just teasing one another. These two made the teaser launch look like a family event happening, where Madhuri and Sanjay are the elders, Aditya and Sonakshi are first siblings, Alia and Varun looked like the youngest/spoil brats in the family.

This is only a teaser, let’s wait until the trailer releases to know more ‘Kalank’.

    So, enough about us.

    How did YOU find ‘Kalank’?

    1. Has anyone noticed how Alia is always painted white or made to look lighter than anyone out there in the movie? I don’t know the purpose, she may be fairer in real compared to others but she is always projected with extra lighting almost making her of a White race ! (may be the director or producer thinks being ‘White’ is beautiful)

    2. I did not like the teaser. I will wait till the trailer to decide if I really want to watch it.
Alia and Varun are huge miscasts. Varun with that voice is only fit for comedy movies with silly characters. Alia does not have the beauty nor the grace for this role.

Again it was hilarious the beginning bit about Sanjay and his 350 women & also the Ranbir Kapoor reference.

    3. It didn’t take much for me to exclaim “Oh, this looks like a Bhansali movie”. Colors to some camera angles resemble a lot to what we see from SLB. So many of SLB haters (or DP-RS haters?) said everybody can make a period film and bla bla.
Well yes, anybody can make a period film but the question was about look of the trailer and not why it is set in 1940s. There is a difference.
I think this will be a big test for Varun and Alia who have mostly done urban oriented roles.

      1. I agree to this. I think I am not impressed with this teaser and the look for actors because there is nothing new in it. Her posture, even her ghunghat and that look — everything is what Deepika has already done. To me, and I might be wrong— this is an attempt to show that Alia is more beautiful than Deepika or Aishwarya.

I don’t understand KJo’s mentality and where they are going with this one? KJO is good with urban rich spoilt people movie and SLB is good with period drama. I can’t imagine SLB making Student of the Year kinda movie with snobbish students who have no worries in life except looking sexy and partying — same with KJO making this kind of movie where all he has done is copying SLB’s style including Alia’s look.

But one thing is for sure. No one can make his actress look so beautiful and elegant than SLB. He is fascinated with their beauty. Once upon a time, Yash Chopra knew that. Now it’s SLB alone!

        Not Karan at least!

        1. KJo is pushing hard to make Alia the number one heroine of bw. Everything from fake relationships, hijacking movies from other actresses to asking everyone on his show about Alia, he is at it. In this teaser, all I could see was Alia trying hard to emote through eyes and posture but failing. I don’t know about the hype but I think she is pretty ok actor.

    4. Madhuri is the only non insider in the film. Sanjay varun alia sonakshi ark are all ‘insiders’. 5/6 insiders
Yes Alia is a good actress but consider for a moment she has been shoved down our throats all the time. In that song let’s nacho she was kind of made into a forced ‘sexy’even though sexy is a look she doesn’t do well. She was taken By kjo to World economic forum davos. At some point after relentless shoving the audience will say, I relent. Also this kind of promotion does not create an equal playing field.

    5. Every one comes with their strength. Deepika’s strength is her beauty . Alia’s is acting skill. Alia is not as beautiful as Deepika and here I felt she is trying to outdo Deepika by emulating something that she cannot pull off.

Don’t get me wrong. Alia is cute but she does not have that regal look that Deepika has.

To me, Deepika is the most beautiful woman because of her height and there is something about her smile.

    6. Someone on India forum speculated that kalank might be heavily “inspired” by a old Bengali movie kalankini kankabati another period drama staring Mithun da and sharmilS
      Tagore.

    7. Notice how they are trying to project Alia as the beautiful heroine, with the expensive wardrobe and a name like “Roop”.But yet she looks ordinary.Sonakshi with her simple styling looks much more gorgeous.Looks like KJos plan to project Alia as the replacement for beauties like Deepika and Katrina is not working

      1. Did anyone else notice how low alias neckline has been going recently … she looks better than she has looked in a while and the extra skin makes her neck look longer I think ….
I think she is very good actress’s but in the looker area I don’t think she can ever be a classic beauty ….

      2. I read a funny comment on India forum how she is competing with an ostrich.long neck, especially in that Harper bazaar cover she is stretched like one.all her recent appearance have her stretching her neck beyond its capacity, and I read so many comments noticing the same.she so badly wants to replace dp.first it was kareena in 2012,and then Katrina for a short while, then dp and now with kalank ash.as soon as kalank hits the screen she will compare herself with Nandini, the most beautiful any woman ever has looked on screen.and to think she is playing a woman known for her beauty over whose death auraangazeb lost his mind…serves karan well.she will make it laughable with her supposed beauty.god help ranveer who has to romance one plastic jhanvi and jhelofy alia the ethereal beauty in his film.

    8. When will people realise that social media opinions dosent decide the fate of a film . Real audience and word of mouth decide the fate of a film.

And it’s accepted by film trade that commercial movies open well than niche movies. Even sonu ki titu ki sweety opened huge at box office with lesser known stars. Skts is also a well padded film with music and masala content. Even tanu weds manu returns opened on double digit. But will a non commercial movie open huge— in most cases no. But life time of good made movies are always high.

Even Total dhamal and most Salman movies are trolled and ripped apart on social media. Critics panned total dhamal and many other salman movies. But these social media panning didn’t effect either the opening or the life time. Most indian audience depend on word of mouth not reviews of journalists or trolls. The percentage of people who follow review is 1-2%.

Many movies like dirty picture …etc have lip locks and raunchy scenes. And these were kinda used to promote the movie, and these movies were successful in spite of raunchy stuff. And that’s because of the good content.

Befikre failed because of the wom ( most important for india films business) was extremely bad and not social media panning. And wom usually comes into play from the second day ( as stated by many trade analysts).

Will Befikre open around the same 10 cr if it was a non commercial movie and it’s about life of a saint, with bland/boring music???? Definitely NO. So comparing opening of commercial and non commercial movie is like comparing two heterogeneous entities.

      1. ***Hey mona this reply is for our previous conversation.I posted it wrongly.
Other folks ignore this comment, not related to kalank.

      2. @pooja Read my previous comment. I did say that the movie has negative wom and was one of the reason for the flop. And I did not compare Piku with Befikre. I just showed the so-called paddings you mentioned apart from music did not work in Befikre favour.

And last year proved that when movie trailers are trolled and bashed mercilessly online Tugs and Race 3 the business is affected. Simmba trailer also recieved mixed wom but because it was a mass, commercial family movie it survived. And you are comparing Befikre an urban metro multiplex commercial movie to a massy commercial masala movies like TD (a family movie) and Salman movies (a superstar. Whose flops make 100 crores). Urban movies like Befikre only work in metros not in mass centres so comparison with TD and Salman mass movies is not apt.. Not all commercial movies romcom or not are pan India movies. Commercial mpvies with urban flavour only work in metros where as commercial movies with heartland rustic feel work in both mass and class /urban centres. The Dulhania series, TWMR, RamLeela an example of this latter category.

It is comparable to a movie like SKTS definitely not TD or Salman mass movies. Look at SKST opening and Befikre’s opening, one opened at 6 cores and the other at 10 crores. SKTS worked because of positive wom but Befikre crashed because of negative wom as I have said earlier. In 2016 RS’s contemporaries opened their movies RK’s hit ADHM (another urban centric multiplex movie) opened at 13 crores++ which was a diwali release and clashed with Shivay. Both Tiger’s Baaghi 1(hit) and Varun’s Dishoom (average) opened to 11crores++ . So there is not much difference between RS’s Befikre opening with his contempraries movies of similar urban metro centric commercial movie in 2016 it is that Befikre flopped.

Dirty picture (not a romcom) and other sleazy sex comedies or Bhatt camp sex movies are sold like that and there content is sex and kisses. But if one went to watch Befikre expecting a sleazy sex comedy/sex drama one would be highly disappointed (because it was a frothy romcom) so that will contribute to negative wom. Similarly people who watched the movie later on said that they should have marketed the movie differently. Because the kisses in the movie is very tame as no prolong close-up love making scenes were shown in the movie. They could have snipped some of the kisses and the movie would have worked better.

I read the trade reports of Befikre and it was not rejected in mass centres. Only metros contribited to its collection and some trade people did say that demonetization did affect its business like other movies released around that time like Rock on 2, Force 2, DZ. An SRK starrer DZ opened at 8.75 crores. Also Befikre screen count was reduced because of demonetization. It was released on 1200 screens only.

So yes, I will not deny Befikre was a bad movie and it flopped because of negative wom and negative reviews. but whatever opening it had was because of RS only and maybe music. Adi/Yash Chopra fans or Vani fans have no contribution. The trailer was not liked by neutrals and fans. Most fans go watch movies opening day/weekend not neutrals and non fans. Neutrals non fans depend on wom and the movie had negative wom all around it.

    9. What’s the point if you have the female artists name featuring first in the credits..but don’t pay them enough renumeration….n some lesser talented males…even ones with lesser box office pull get paid more….what big favour r u doing for the women…

      1. i think they called this hypocrisy out in the AIB video Kangana did spoofing chitiya kalaiyan and calling all sexism in bollywood. LInes go where hero says ” put your name before the hero” and she goes ” still your pay check has more zeroes.”

    10. Definitely a confused underwhelming teaser.Did not evoke any emotions, just laughably grand filmy looking sets..As for Varun ,his accent sounds like a college kid from Punjabi Bagh…I guess Karan was trying to portray alia as some ethereal beauty but she looks strange in that white makeup…sona shines through.i have a feeling that this movie is going to be a disaster of epic proportions….

      1. Exactly my observation. Alia is always shown with lighter and white skin makeup, wonder what the thinking is.

    11. I’m sooo happy to see comments echoing my EXACT thoughts

This trailer belonged to Sonakshi! She looks so pretty n with perfect emotions (reminds me of her masterpiece Lootera); but alas, KJo ll slash her role like anythin to give his kid Alia all mileage.
Varun’s voice is so so so distracting n not at all good!
Hope there is at least SOME character arc; n not ppl plain black n white (Sanju is bad, forcing already married Adi to marry Alia who loves VD); (Madhuri is good helping Alia VD meet).. hope SOMEONE is gray!

Final prediction; movie ll take bumper opening n be a superhit (the lowest common denominator ll make it a superhit; just like the very manipulative Sanju); Alia n Varun ll walk away wt all accolades as they definitely have the biggest roles; VD looks as if he s ready to go full OTT here; n Alia, well, trying to play on her “supposed beauty” only

      1. I hope they have used proper vfx for enhancing her supposed beauty, already ash and dp fans are enraged, including non fans like me at their audacity to paint her as more beautiful and desirable.her dance and looks will be critiqued and god forbid if she falls short, she is going to be trolled like anything.

      2. @lucy well kjo has the reviews and critiqued sections covered like he always does for alia. alia will be placed as an equal of madhuri which is rofl but kjo will do it just wait for it

      3. Well he will definitely get industry people to say baby Meryl Streep has finally done her mother India,i hugely suspect it as javed Akita’s said that padmavat was deepikas mother India.going by her obsession to replace deepika she will do that.they will get madhuri to say how she has outdone Devdas, because 1990 she has been the dancing queen and her kathak numbers are the benchmark for newer actresses.and oviously the film critics anupama tartan Rajeev Masand will give 4 stars for alias magnificent performance.its already known.

But the movie paying audience will they throng the film to see alias so called beauty, because that’s what they are marketing it as.two brothers in love with her for her beauty, varun’s tweet that beauty has a price to pay,all those other character introduction quotes about her painted a picture of her being a highly desired woman driving men to their ends.at least that what I understand.

All her previous films were marketed on her being Desi meryl streep and on affairs.but never on her beauty, that too surpassing ash.i wonder how can karan really make people see things that aren’t there.making everyone say that she can act and is hugely popular is somewhat believable, she is an okay actress and has spunk but that she can dance with grace and is a looker like ash in the film ,how is he going to PR manage it.i wonder.

      4. @lucy Alia has literally been coping all of ranbir’s exes style. After making fun of dp airport style alia is literally doing what he was cracking a joke with dp at kwk. Alia in emotional scenes needs to improve it comes off as not real but since kjo has for years got people to say OMG she is great actor people buy it now its not like other actresses are getting hand picked roles to show their talent.Just look at how in kwk kjo skipped anushka’s performance in pari and look at how his minions ranked her, after raazi there were articles by how she is the biggest and the best female actress of all time.

kjo has the actor part covered what alia lacked is former bw top ladies ada and classic south asian beauty hence the recent attempt to push the OMG she is eternal beauty by kjo, She is dressing for the part also kjo is also trying to get rid of alia isnt ranbir’s type. Just watch as madhuri will now go on to say how beatufil alia is how she dances like her has her screen presence. This movie is also to establish her as the mughal family member for takth. for which someone like sara is more suited as she has the screen presence and the beauty

      5. Lucy and leaps, now I get why alia said kalank’s director initially wasn’t convinced she was right for the role. Now she’s been announced for rajamouli’s next. It truly is alia’s world and we’re just living in it…

      6. London,it’s good that she is in rrr.atleast it means she won’t be in bhansali film.i so want to watch it in theatres, his films are beautiful to admire and potato will just ruin it.as for rajamouli he doesn’t really sketch out women characters well.tamanaah was a showpiece only.anushka and rambha got lesser screen space that they should have as the story was revolving around him.she might have a meaty part, but I doubt she will be central role.

I think until she marries and has a baby she will be in all possible big budget film in every state.i am almost praying ranbir marries her,it’s a bad thing to wish it on any woman but as of now the only thing that will stop the overdose.thankfully varun is tired of her and is working with other actress.if kalank and takht flops atleast she won’t be shoved into films which require beauty.

      7. Leaps, one time that I was actually fangirling on deepika.I am not her fan as such but she had incredible poise and grace.alia just can’t keep the pretences,it slips off and shows her mean snobbish Regina George side.now it’s kriti tapsee and Sanya who will bear the brunt of her mean attitude.they have got hits.

    12. well it looked like kjo just took basically all of slb movies put them in a blender to produce this.

    13. The trailer looked nice, it felt like a film I would want to watch on the big screen. SLB doesn’t have a monopoly on period films but of course his films do generally have much more artistic flair and he’s so well known for them. Not all period films have to be this magnum opus like one of the commenters said. This did seem very heavily “inspired”. That said I thought SLB kind of overdid it in BM and Padmavat. Madhuri looked phenomenal at the trailer launch and it will be nice to see Madhuri and Sanjay Dutt on screen together. ARK and Sonakshi, I feel this is their time to shine, let’s see what they make of this opportunity. The bull fight scenes look ridiculous, why is there always something that’s badly CG’d that makes you want to laugh?! As for Alia and Varun, I think they make a great pair, Alia looked very.. “fair”, like the only thing they were highlighting was how fair and dainty she is, but she didn’t necessarily look “beautiful”/pretty. It just stuck out like “oh.. yes this is why SLB doesn’t cast you”. Varun, so much smokey eye make up with the contact lenses lol I’m sure he loved that look on set.

      1. Yep, I ll definitely watch it too. I think most people will..these large scale Dharma films always have bumper opening despite middling reviews. Sonakshi looks so beautiful and she acts well so this might be a good film for her career..hopefully her role wasnt chopped off to offset Alia’s.

Does anyone know if Varun is really playing Sanjay and MD’s illegitimate son? The plot seems deliciously dramatic! Getting a very Heathcliffe/Cathy vibe from Varun/Alia idk why. Hope Alia’s role is not totally sugary sweet and a little bit more complicated. Like Leela in RL or Nandini in Hum Dil..they were not grey but they were hot messes..such great roles and so fun to watch! Will be boring to watch Varun brood and scheme and go “grey” all on his own.

    14. This movie is grossly miscast. Adi Roy in a period drama? Not sure if Alia, Varun can pull this off, either. Let’s see..

Sonakshi looks beautiful. I wanted to see more of her.

    15. Its good that this movie is made. Now everyone will know that not every actor can rock Period movie . Bhansali-esque feel minus the depth and goosebumps.

Now it must be clear why SLB repeats his actors and all the fake news of etc etc were first choice for Bajirao and Khilji can wash their mouch with soap.

Ram leela was the audition for Bajirao-Mastani. After that there was no other mastani or Bajirao.

Coming to this trailer , Sanjay dutt looks fine, Alia – clearly not SLB herione(sorry !) , Varun – dialogue is awful , Madhuri is okay but she will pull it off somehow.

Sona seems the best here for me … she is a beauty . Trailer is underwhelming , nevertheless wishing the movie well.

    16. In the poster , it’s clearly put the two separate triangles in the movie ..one Varun the kalank son of Madhuri and Sanjay .. and alia the kalank on couple sona and ark .. I hope d movie is just not this .. anyways d movie doesn’t seem to offer any new mystery or story .its plain old Kjo stuff packaged in diff movie set .. And in period drama varun with his mumbaiya voiceover is totally offputting .. that’s one bad casting for sure .. any other a list actor could have pulled off this introductory shot much better than him .. also that vfx bull , makes his built also look entirely fake in that scene despite its not ..

    17. It’s like KJo and director of the movie saw all of SLB’s movies and picked iconic scenes and said let us recreate them with Alia instead of Ash or Deepika. Madhuri is a aging chandramukhi. Varun ‘s voice seems very weak for monologues. They should have let Sanjay Dutt talk.

    18. If this is indeed a audition tape for SLB then Sonakshi looks beautiful and has the right amount of pain in her eyes to play a Bansali lead heroine. He should take her opposite Salman.

    19. I love watching period movies on big screen (especially SLB movies because his movies are a visual treat, aesthetically so pleasing, grand) but I’m not impressed with this at all. Something is lacking and the teaser is quite underwhelming. I think I will skip the movie for sure. Abhi Varman and Kjo got heavily inspired from SLB it seems. That kite scene with Alia is lifted straight from Nandini’s intro in HDDCS.

Alia as someone else mentioned looks like a child playing dress-up. Madhuri and Sonakshi will have small roles so that they can never overshadow Aloo. Varun’s voice is quite distracting. He should have modulated his voice accordingly.

@admin Sajid Nadiawala did not produce any of SLB’s period films so his name in brackets after the sentence about SLB making money for his producers is a typo I guess.

    20. Its hard to believe sanjay dutt and madhuri dixit were contemporaries once, look at the difference in how they’ve aged! You could slap their pics side-by-side on a poster and voila! the best “Say No to Drugs” advertisement ever.

as nice as it is to see Mads on the big screen again, i would love for this to flop just to wipe the smirk of nepo-papa’s face…

    21. Underwhelmed and heavy slb hangover in some of the sets. The movie is releasing in a month, why not release a full trailer? Is this teaser necessary? or a strategy to build hype and sell it to distributors for a higher price? that cg bull confuses me, so varun is a muslim blacksmith who rides bulls? wut??

    22. Movie might be a total copy paste from multiple landmark films from the past. But I guess it will work well at box-office and might as well end up being a super success( as few trade people are predicting).

But as admin already mentioned period movies have a tough time at box-office. I totally loved jodha-akbar , and consider it as best Bollywood masala style historical romance. A Bansali historic movie is much more authentic than jodha akbar etc. But jodha anbar still struggled at box office. Even bajirao mastani just about recoverd it’s costs. So it’s tough to predict the fate of a historical movies.

      1. @monalisa …..Success of a movie depends on how much profits it makes for distributors. If the theatrical rights are sold for 80 cr then the movie should make around 170 cr for it to be a profit venture for distributors, who buy theatrical rights of a movie.

Budget of bajirao is around 150 -/+ . Producers were already on profit side before the release of the movie cause they sold television rights ( 50 crore) , music rights, online steaming rights and distribution/ thestrical rights ($..???). Any idea on how much was theatrical rights sold for??? If it was around 80-85 cr then the movie just about recoverd investment for distibutors. If the distribution deal is just around 50-60 cr then it made huge profits for distributors ( which I don’t think is the case).

      2. @pooja Boi will never give a movie a hit tag if it did not make money for distributers. This is not Taran or some other trade annalyst posting producers figures they dont post producers figures but their own figures from distrbuters/exhibitors. If the movie did not make money for distributers they would have never given a hit tag. Bajirao Mastani was distribited by the producers Eros themselves so no need to sell the movie at a high price. Even Padmaavat was distributed by Viacom, the producers themseleves.

      3. @pooja All the movies nowadays are safe and producers would have recoverd budget and sometimes in profit even before movies hit theatres because of television, music, satelite rights sold. These things are not taken in to consideration when giving bo verdicts. Boi and other trade sites when giving verdict they only look at how much the movie made in its theatrical run in India. And that is the money made by the distributers. If we take satelite, tv, music right, overseas bo in to account no movie will be declared as a flop. Because some movies which are considered flop in India are declared blockbusters overseas. None of the Khan movies would have been called if satelite rights, music rights, etc.. are taken in to account when bo verdicts are given because these movies were sold at high prices. Tugs got 30 million dollars upfront from their Chinese distrbutors alone, Race 3 made 290 crores from its domestic bo+ satelite rights yet it was declared a flop because distributers did not make money . But still these film was declared a flop because it did not make money for everyone. Film verdicts are given if everyone in the chain producers, distributers make profit through the theatrical Indian release.

      4. **film hit verdicts (hits, super hits, blockbuster, All time blockbuster) are given only when distributors and all other people in the chain make money in the Indian theatrical run.

And BOi and even Taran (eventhough he uses producers figures) never declare a movie a hit if only the producers make money. They may say the movie is a success or recovered the budget but will never give a clean hit verdict. Mostly in these cases average or semi hit tag will be given.

    23. Quite disappointed with the teaser. Its neither here nor there. There does not seem to be a strong thread of anything particular emotion running through…just bits and pieces…copy of SLB here and there. The voice of Varun and Alia does not capture the essence of the foregone era. Madhuri looks pale…what happened to her screen presence? Sona has the best expression even in the poster but it is reminiscent of Lootera. The part where Alia turns her head around in the boat is probably supposed to convey mystery…but she looks possessed! Overall its an overkill with just expensive sets and zero emotion beneath it. Maybe the trailer will be better.

    24. Does anyone feel this is like an audition tape for sanjay Lela bhansali to show alia in the league of ash.?i mean I had thought she would target deepika, but they went for ash.alia and karan hired army of fans who compared her to ash from Jodha, also the kite scene is from Nandini in hddcs, the Kathak is to show she can dance like mastani, the way she carries herself gave me serious mastani hangover.unfortunately she looked out of place and like a little girl playing dress up.no amount of makeup hair costume and plastic surgery will make her look like deepika, let alone ash.i just hope she is not cast opposite salman in inshallah, this film has kiara and kriti too.sonakshi is the only one who looked good, she has such a classical Indian face.but knowing karan he will cut all her scenes where she looks good.

      1. Aditya is hot, wish he wasn’t as lazy.looks perfect for period films, the white Kurta look was smashing.he and sona looked so good together.but they have lifted the colour palette and song settings and few shots from slb films.feel like takhtwill be a royal mess

      2. Hahahaha…it does look an expensive audition tape for the child bride aka Alia. SLB for sure would reject it outright!

    25. Varun n Alia TOTALLY have hots fr each other… The way Varun picked up Alia.. Natasha must be fuming!
Alia n Varun deserve each other; NOT the FAKEST hookup of this century Ranbir n Alia.. Period!

      1. Varun just wants to sell his movie, since he bilieves people like varun-aloo jodi.Varun dosent know how to handle girls like aloo.

What I’ve observed from gully boy promotions is, whenever aloo tried to act chipku and touchy with ranveer, he used to distance or cut her off by talking about/hyping Deepika and reminding aloo about ranbir( her supposed bf). He knows how to handle/cut off girls like aloo smartly.

Same can’t be said about varun. He doesn’t know how to hype his gf . I guess it can be stressful for Natasha since she’s from a non film I background.

    26. I dont know..I was really looking forward to this because I had heard it was a partition based love story which seemed like an interesting backdrop and with dharma producing, I thought it would have beautiful production design. But this is very heavily inspired by Bhansali and I dont think everyone can pull off that ‘heavy’ aesthetic..even Bhansali himself overdid it in Saawariya. A period film need not always be so overdone..a simpler look like Lootera rings more authentic sometimes. But I guess maybe the story has an epic feel to it so this ornateness might actually serve the story? Will have to wait and see. Varun also feels like a paler version of Khilji with his raw aggression. Let’s hope my first impressions are incorrect. This will definitely be a litmus test for his stardom though. Also, one can onluly imagine how amazing the late Sridevi would have been as Bahaar Begum…too sad for words

    27. This teaser was really awful! Bad-copy of a period movie with no soul. U know like sui dhaga was to Bareilly ki barfi and Dhadak was to the original. Can’t believe how bikau media is saying it was good. Waiting to hear the real janta

    28. This is going to be epic. It will set a benchmark for all future period films.

Honestly slb who??? Rajamouli who ???? Theyre just wannabes. Dharma productions and kjo are the OG.

Varun was splendid . Aloo was mesmerising. Deepika and ranveer should find alternative careers cause varun di caprio and potato are here to rule. As kangu already declared ” It’s potatos world we’re living in “.

P.s — Any clue on what’s happening with Dp. It’s really scary that padmaavat is the only film she did in last 3 years. Chappak is the only film she’s doing. I guess the struggle for established non-nepo stars is real…

      1. Theres ‘no struggle fr DP’.. her price tag is wayyyyy too much; not everyone can afford her.. simple!

      2. Honestly pretty sure nothing’s gonna ever change when it comes to heroines remuneration in Bollywood. Glad that she’s taking a stand. But I feel she’s just loosing great projects by doing this, since the likes of aloo are ready to work for peanuts. Multiple projects and still potato dosent earn at par with the work she’s done, says much abt her worth in the market.

      3. @Samantha I am from gen… when Sridevi was decending from top and Madhuri was climbing. And I can tell you these 2 were the last heriones who were paid more than the male stars …even the khans.

They had box office openings like that. DP’s highest opening is 6cr for a awesome movie like PIKU and Ranveer’s lame befikre was 11cr .

And PIKU did not even crosss 100cr , the only herione in author backed role and who carried the film on her shoulders and did 100 cr biz for this gen.. are Alia and Kangana.

Like aishwarya , DP is also adoresement star…biggest compared to contemporaries…not films wise.

Like aish she also needs a ensemble cast …then she adds huge value… So i dont know about being to pricey and cannot afford her.

Producers in the past paid heriones like madhuri, sridevi etc more than male stars when it was clear who brings in money.

If a star is wanted and is irreplacebale then producers will have to PAY.

      4. @kiran…… piku is a niche non commercial movie. Where the protagonists of movie for half the time talk about “potty”. While Befikre is a commercial movie from the mighty yrf with chartbuster music + liplock scenes to attract target audience i.e youth. How can you compare pikus opening with befikre. All female centric movies that opened huge at box-office like veere di wedding, dirty picture , tanu weds manu ,queen …etc are commercial movies with padding of chartbuster music not metro centric niche movie like piku.

Befikre released after Bajirao mastani. All trade analysts say ” the opening of a stars movie depends on the success or failure of his last movie , bajirao mastani is a success”. While piku released in the beginning of 2015 not after bajirao mastanis success. It’s absurd to compare piku with befikre cause they’re totally different. I can give you a whole damn analysis on this. Even raazi opened with less than 5 cores.

Producers are still ready to pay deepika 10 cr +/- for female centric . It’s just that they’re not able to afford a-list actor’s + deepika combo.Since a-list actor charges between 10-40 cr. This will totally inflate the budget.

Back in 90’s remuneration wasn’t this high for actor’s. All producers are complaining on how massively the stars are charging currently, while that wasn’t the case in 90’s or 80’s . Comparisions with 80’s and 90’s superstars is absurd due to the above factor.
Watch the producers/directors discussion on film companion, you’ll know how different the scenario is back then (90’s or 80’s ).

        1. I get the point @Kiran is trying to make. But @Pooja explains it well. Soon after Khilji, Ranveer gets projects like 83 and Takht. While Deepika even after a dream run in 2013 got one Piku and Slb and after Piku just Chhapaak. Besides being an outsider she’s also a woman. Double barriers to cross.

That’s why the only option ahead for actresses to find satisfactory work is producing themselves. So that a director can approach them with an inkling of financial benefit.

Plus @samantha Deepika has said it already how she’s ready to not take a penny if the money is going into the film and not to her co star pockets. In fact she has proved it with her actions too. She took up Finding Fanny with less or no pay, settling for profit share. So she’s walked the talk already.

If she’s not getting projects reasons are:

          1) segregation of best projects for nepotism
          2) sexism which will pay Bobby Deol 8 cr but refuse 13 for a more promising actress.
          3) She’s asking for quality something which Bollywood lacks!
          4) I think she’s also asking for collaboration in project like Kangana which won’t be okay for the egos of Bollywood.

These reasons apply to all other actresses too. She and Kangana will stand firm and ask money while others will adjust for need of work. Neither sides are wrong. Each to their own.

        2. Kalank honestly is much better than I expected. But it weighs down under HEAVY influences that the whole thing seems jaded and artificial. Also actors are miscast, they can’t lift the weight.

Alia and Varun are not for this genre, this thought cemented more with the teaser. Aditya is in between, he has the look but act I’m not sure. Sanjay looks in element surprisingly.

The biggest let down was Madhuri. I just can’t believe how bad she looks and acts. I understand Alia and Varun trying to put on persona bz they’re not cut for it. But Madhuri who did Chandramukhi going down is shocking! Let’s wait for the trailer and see. Right now I’m glad Sridevi was saved.

The surprise element was Sonakshi. She is truly an actress who should work with Slb. I wish she could have been Mehrunisa, Kashi was done so well by PC otherwise I would have liked her in that role too. Hopefully she can join Salman in latest film.

I don’t know if she’ll get the space to shine or her role will be chopped so as to not overpower Alia in Dharma, but hoping she makes a mark and it helps her career in right direction. Wish Parineeti also gets a fair chance again.

All said and done can’t say about BO. If it’s horrible like Toh, Zero it will flop. If it’s average or below average still it will make money. Let’s wait for the trailer for a better decision. Trailer will decide.

      5. @pooja Befikre may have chartbuster music, lip lock and YRF banner Adi Chopra as the director (paddings as you call) but apart from music everything work against the film. Its trailer was rejected. The trailer was hated memes were made so much negativity was around the movie even before the release something similar to what Tugs and Race 3 experienced last year. Out of the so-called paddings music was the only plus for the movie. Lip locks work against the movie as people thought it was a sleazy sex comedy because of all the liplocks when in reality it was a frothy romcom. Also got an adult certificate so family audience could not watch the movie. The movie have nothing in it that is trademark Adi/Yash Chopra romance (coy Indian wholesome family epic love stories sagas) for people who love Yash and adi Chopra movies to come and watch the movie. Also the heroine Vani was rejected at the get go ridculed for her plastic surgery. And it did not release on a holiday or pre holiday yet opened at double digits of 10 cores++ which is a good opening for a hated movie that did not release on a holiday. It made 60 crores ++ and would have been able to get an average verdict (because it was never declared an out an out flop by boi but a below average movie, meanining the distributors loss was 20% less than flops) if it had got one more week of clash free run. Befikre released on 9th December and Dangal (an ATBB that made 300 crores) relased two weeks after on 23rd Dec. Dangal demolished the already bad business of Befikre.

So yeah Befikre may have been a flop but the so called paddings you have stated worked against the movie. The trailer got negative wom necause of the kissing, none of Adi and Yash Chopra fans came to watch the movie becaise of the kissing, it was trashed by the critics, hardcore Ranveer fans hated the movie and trailer, the audience gave negative wom after watching the movie.
