American Ballet Theatre : Isabella Boylston – Ballerina

Ballerina Isabella Boylston is seen here at the rehearsals for ‘The Bright Stream’ earlier this week. Isabella is currently a dancer for the American Ballet Theatre and man, she is a great dancer! If you have a chance, you should go and see her performance. Whether or not the story is good, Isabella doesn’t disappoint! Last year, Isabella was promoted to Soloist by the American Ballet Theatre. Isabella was also the recipient of the Clive Barnes Foundation’s second annual awards for young talents in dance and theater.

 

Born in Sun Valley, Idaho, Boylston began dancing at the age of 3. While training at the Academy of Colorado Ballet, she won the gold medal at the 2001 Youth America Grand Prix in New York City. In 2002, she trained at the Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida, on full scholarship. (ABT)

Boylston joined ABT’s Studio Company in 2005. She was named an apprentice to the main company in May 2006 and joined ABT’s corps de ballet in March 2007.

For those not familiar with the world of ballet will probably remember Isabella Boylston as the girl who was dumped when her boyfriend Benjamin Millepied met Natalie Portman on the sets of ‘Black Swan’. Isabella, as a true lady, never spoke out on this issue or on how Ben cheated on her with Natalie. I don’t know if this is true or not, but rumor has it that they were still living together when Benjamin started working on ‘Black Swan’. When Isabella and Benjamin were together, she was literally his muse (and he also had a different hairstyle!). As much as he was obsessed with Natalie Portman on the sets of ‘Black Swan’, he used to be that way with Isabella too. In fact, he used her to create the dance movements he had in his head. Don’t know whether she was upset by Ben’s movements on Natalie, but she did dropped out last year on his ballet piece ‘Troika’. In fact, she is friends with the lady who was cast as Natalie’s body double in the film. You probably heard of Sarah Lane after the controversy last year when she claimed the film production asked her to keep quiet on the whole thing.

 

my whole breakup was a difficult thing to go through. But these things happen to a lot of people. [Pauses] I have totally moved on from it, and all the experience and wisdom that I gained has been invaluable, and I wouldn’t be where I am now without everything that I have gone through, so I’m grateful for every experience that I’ve had. It’s the first time that I’ve ever lived alone, because I had boarding school and a bunch of girls in Studio Company and then [Millepied]. I have loved getting to furnish my apartment myself. I’m in the new Wheeldon and the new Ratmansky. I love the choreographic process. I feel like working with a choreographer on something new, especially if I believe in their vision, is my favorite thing about dancing. When dancers believe that what they’re doing is good and feel inspired by the choreographer’s vision, they’re more likely to give everything. If you don’t think it’s good or don’t trust the choreographer, you’re going to hold back. You can try your best to execute it well, but it’s completely different when you’re really inspired and trusting what they’re giving you to do. (Interviewed by Gia Kourlas for TimeOut.com)

 

I finally worked up the courage to go see ‘Black Swan’. It’s fine. Honestly, I thought it was really amusing. I don’t understand why people were taking it so seriously. I didn’t really see it as something to be taken seriously. It was interesting. It didn’t really have much to do with ballet. It was really horror. Thriller. Or something.
